Visual communication consist of two parts: personality and visual organization. The personality of a presentation is what provides the emotional impact —your instinctual response to what you see. Creating an appropriate personality requires the use of colors, type treatments, images, shapes, patterns, and more, to "say" the right thing to your audience. A well thought-out visual organization, on the other hand, can greatly enhance usability by grouping information into meaningful page elements and sequences. Such a system relies on an understanding of how people use visual relationships to distinguish objects and what those relationships reveal to viewers (through visual weight and visual hierarchy). Visual Communication is a key component of interface design and unfortunately often under-represented in interaction design methodologies. This talk introduces the core principles of Visual Communication (with an emphasis on Visual Organization) and through many practical examples details how they can be put to use during the Web application interface design process. Visual Communication provides an international forum for the growing body of work in numerous interrelated disciplines. The journal s definition of the visual is broad and includes : * still and moving images * graphic design and typography * visual phenomena such as fashion, professional vision, posture and interaction * the built and landscaped environment * the role of the visual in relation to language, music, sound and action Visual Communication is interdisciplinary bringing together articles from a range of subjects, including:--- anthropology , communication studies , discourse studies and semiotics , media and cultural studies , sociology , disciplines dealing with history, theory and practice of visual design. Visual Communication professionals make good use of both their creativity and their training in traditional and computer drawing, design and photography to create memorable, artistic graphic works. Essentially, they learn how to communicate messages, emotions and ideas through the use of images instead of simply with words. Possible job titles in this field include: * Illustrator * Animator * Graphic designer * Web designer Visual Communication professionals are trained in courses which emphasize both the technical and the esthetic aspects of design, and they are usually very well trained in computer design and graphics. Students choosing to take some business courses in addition to their design courses are able to work in commercial jobs in Visual Communications. Finding a jobs in the industry is quite competitive, so education is of the utmost importance, as is relevant on-the-job training. Most Visual Communication professionals find jobs with website development companies, publishing houses, design companies, printers, and advertising agencies. |
